“We are no longer the diamond industry; we are a technology-driven industry”, said Amish Shah at a recent roundtable discussion hosted by Sandhya Valecha.
If you think of it, what Amish said possibly paints the picture for the future of the diamond industry.
In a world where Lab-grown diamonds are challenging centuries-old conventions, the shimmering boundaries between the precious stone industry and technology are slowly blurring. And as any tech enthusiast would tell you, there are three key characteristics of every successful technological innovation: Speed, Scale, and Broad Acceptance, often fueled by affordability.
In the context of diamond industry, these hallmarks of tech innovation can lead us to a fascinating standpoint a few years down the line:
This is what I Imagine would happen:
Natural Diamonds, with their allure and timeless charm, will continue to hold their premium positioning, savored by those yearning for luxury, rarity and a tangible piece of Mother Nature’s artistry.
On the other hand, lab grown diamond jewelry, seen as the alternative to natural diamonds by a certain segment of the market today, might soon get looked at as tech products. Much like the fast-fashion industry, they could appeal to a broader market seeking affordability, sustainability, and a novel form of luxury.
I feel, broadly, there will be no competition between Natural and lab grown diamonds that we see today. And each will continue to appeal to its own market segment.
Of course, within this spectrum, some lab grown diamonds brands will indeed command premium positioning. Their secret sauce? Powerful storytelling and relentless product innovation.
