The #diamond industry 💎 (that includes both natural and #labgrowndiamonds ) can't seem to get enough of Malaika Arora. And we fail to understand why? 🤔. Remember that time when Malaika was hired by both a lab-grown diamond retailer and a natural diamonds brand in India? Talk about sending mixed signals and confusing the consumers. Just this week, guess who was the guest of honor at the new store opening of a big-time studded jewelry brand in India? Yep, Malaika herself. Usually, when a brand brings on a celeb as their ambassador, they're looking for someone who fits their vibe, someone who can basically become the brand's twin. They're definitely not looking for someone who's already buddying up with the competition. But hey, the diamond world doesn't seem too worried about overlap, contradiction, and a muddled brand image. Diamond Marketing MISTAKE: An example of how BAD marketing can harm the #diamond industry as a whole. So, a while back, a popular Indian celebrity, Malaika Arora was roped in by a #labgrowndiamonds startup in India for a paid partnership. In the paid partnership video for them, Malaika can be heard saying things like: "Lab Grown Diamonds are not BLOOD Diamonds, no lives lost, no carbon, etc". A typical US (Lab Grown Diamonds) versus THEM (Mined Diamonds) strategy where you point out the Flaws in existing product and build the case for your product. But, a few months down the line, Malaika was hired by a 'Mined Diamond' company to be the face of the brand. And in an integrated marketing video for them, she can be heard saying things like: "My love for NATURAL #Diamonds... blah blah". Now if you think of it: With the new campaign, it seems like suddenly Malaika no longer cares about - No Carbon, Environment, Water, and everything that she spoke about in the video for Lab Grown Diamonds. IMAGINE how confused her followers would be after listening to her using terms like: Blood Diamonds, No lives lost, No Carbon, etc... To suddenly hear her say: I LOVE Natural Diamonds. Celebrities endorsing anything, even competing ideas for their paycheck has been a long ongoing debate. But the main context of this post is to highlight the lack of vision in the ongoing Diamond marketing campaigns per se. The story is the same across the LGD sector in India. The #labgrowndiamonds category in India won't be built with just US versus THEM marketing or by just flushing the same Celebrities who have or continue to be the face for Mined Diamonds. It's time for the LGD brands to think beyond the cookie-cutter marketing campaigns. But the BIG question: Who will take the lead? Who will revolutionize the LGD space in India with their disruptive marketing campaigns? Well, only time will tell.
